How Reflexology Works
Reflexology is often confused with a foot massage or foot rub. It is not a massage but rather the stimulation of nerve pathways. By specific finger and thumb technique, a reflexologist involves a more direct application to the sensory pathways.
Feet, hands, or ears, which contain thousands of sensory nerve endings are connected to the spinal cord and brain. When these reflex points are stimulated, they activate the peripheral nervous system, sending signals through sensory pathways that help shift the body from the “fight-or-flight” mode of the sympathetic nervous system into the calming, restorative parasympathetic state. This nervous-system shift slows the heart rate, eases muscle tension, reduces vascular constriction and allows blood and nerve supply to flow more freely. Oxygen and nutrients make their way to the areas where needed. Working the feet, hands or ears can clear zone blockages caused by stress and tension. Reflexology also engages mechanoreceptors in the skin and fascia—specialized sensory cells that respond to touch and pressure—helping reduce pain signals and encouraging the release of endorphins. Together, these responses create a whole-body relaxation effect that supports the body’s natural balancing and healing processes. Overall, the body can repair itself unhindered by the effect of stress.
On another note, reflexology as any other healing modality isn’t a one-time fix — it’s a journey toward balance and wellness. Every session gently supports your body’s natural ability to heal. Consistency and regular treatments (at least 1x/month) are often needed to achieve and maintain lasting results.
